A TEMPORARY SPACE BETWEEN A FOREST EDGE AND THE GROUND

Marja-Leena Sillanpää, installation

Photo: Sofie Isaksson

After a forest felling, branches, brushwood and twigs are collected in large piles beside the clear-cut. Like a UFO, such a pile of brushwood has landed in our midst – a collection of residual materials covered by joined sheets as a protective shroud. It appears both as something familiar and as something foreign. As part of the work, the viewer can activate a sound with voices that move through the pile and out into the urban space. The work can be read as a reminder: something that would otherwise exist outside our everyday lives becomes visible, audible and difficult to completely brush aside. Marja-Leena Sillanpää’s work brings together examinations of philosophical and existential questions. The material often serves as a carrier of something that cannot be fully explained.
