Johan Ibrahim Adam, sculpture and installation

Photo: Terese Sundh
In Brickebacken Centre rises a large crystal chandelier. It is built of objects collected from residents in the area. Jewellery, bits of metal, and everyday objects have been gilded, silver-plated, or covered in glitter. The work is rooted in Johan Ibrahim Adam’s own childhood in Brickebacken and his desire to make art accessible in the suburbs. Adam frequently works with the crystal chandelier as motif and examines how light can function as both illumination and power. These recur as both material objects and as symbolic bearers of questions surrounding representation, class and hierarchies. Through this combined process, the work contains many personal narratives that have been joined together into a whole.
