Rören/Johannessen, sculpture

Photographer: Sofie Isaksson. The picture is a montage of two photographs.

The Uncanny Kaleidoscope – Archiving Peak Oil consists of the shell of a Volkswagen. The car’s parts are opened, separated and exhibited, like an insect specimen pinned in a display case. Rören/Johannessen contemplate the car as a body from the fossil era. What once symbolized movement, growth and freedom is presented here as an object in a natural history museum. In their work, the artists explore how we collect, arrange and try to understand the world by categorizing it. The work raises questions about what is preserved, what disappears, and how our oil-dependent history may one day be viewed.
